Big Little Lies’s compelling and atmospheric opening titles inspired my latest big road trip. My all-time favorites, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman’s confident semblance driving across Big Sur’s landmark Bixby Creek Bridge, urged my longing to drive my red Chevy Traverse through it. Zoe Kravitz’s powerful and peaceful demeanor fueled my desire for freedom and adventure. Like many others, I fell head-over-heels over Big Sur’s gorgeous scenery.

I am a believer that birthdays and trips should always be together. Therefore, my birthday was the right time to fulfill that longing. On a cold, cloudy morning (I thought it was going to be warm!), I jumped in my car and drove excitedly to the famous Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur. The breathtaking scenery activates all the good feelings, filling you with humility and gratitude.

Big Sur is a dream destination with glorious imagery and a sky that is nothing less than perfect. As you drive, you will be surrounded by rugged, majestic mountains, prominent redwood forests, and long beaches. I promise you will feel alive and grounded, ready to absorb the natural beauty all around you. Chances are, you will ask yourself if it is, in fact, real. The 90-mile stretch of coastline between Carmel and San Simeon transports you to an unforgettable trip in Mother Nature.

What to See and Do?

This trip is ideal for those who love nature and enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, photography, and beach walking. Among the activities you can do is have a picnic in any of the beautiful spots along Bir Sur, doing yoga at the beach, going for a walk (the sand feels wonderful under the feet), meditation, grounding, and even journaling.

Highway 1

Take a scenic drive on Highway 1 to experience the stunning, rugged coastline and the Pacific Ocean. The imposing road allows you to witness beauty from above.

Pfeiffer Beach

The iconic Pfeiffer Beach is a must-see. It has large rock formations and undergrowth, where visitors can learn about and appreciate the diverse flora and fauna. The panoramic view is simply spectacular.

McWay Falls:

The 80-foot-tall waterfall is housed at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The hike to it cannot be any easier or shorter. The mixture of colors—forest, sea, teal greens, deep blues, and browns—is pleasurable to submerge in.  The waterfall empties directly into the ocean year-round.

Garrapata State Park

One of my favorite highlands of the trip was Garrapata State Park. The ground is adorned with wildflowers of various colors, including yellow, red, and purple, and is surrounded by outstanding blue water and a deep blue sky. Calla Lilies are some of the wildflowers worth appreciating.

Partington Cove

The picturesque 1.1-mile out-and-back trail is considered easy to moderate. It is steep and narrow and guides you through the forest to the tunnel before finally arriving at the cove. It is famous among hiking and nature lovers. Travelers also encounter a beach where they can take in the sun.
